As a cardmaker, I send cards out for many occasions. But I've realized they are usually the traditional ones - you know the birthday's, anniversary's, sympathy. The just because ones are made but not sent to often. And the thinking of you ones are made but sent when something happens - death or an illness.

Well I want to change that! And The Angel Company is here to help! Why not make a card for another reason? Did you know there are MANY "non-traditional" holidays that are perfect to make a card for? On page 2 of our Inspiration Book & Catalogue we've listed those holidays for you. It's a GREAT way to help you get started.

One of the holidays coming up is International Day of Peace on September 21st. As a Girl Scout leader, I'm familiar with this day. We make pinwheels to display at our school incorporating a program called Pinwheels for Peace. It's a way for Girl Scouts (or anyone for that matter) to create a visual public statement about peace.

So imagine how excited I was to create a card showcasing these same things! I grabbed the set Give It A Whirl (RN-23) and created a scene. Let me show you how easy it is to do!

 
First thing is to stamp the pinwheels onto your paper. I placed the three pinwheels on my acrylic block and staggered them. I cut out a cloud using thin paper (think copy paper) to use as my template. Instead of a sponge I used a manicure pad and Memento Summer Sky Ink. Holding the cloud template down, I began swiping the ink around the template.

 

I realized that I wanted my cloud to go down a little so I made a mask for my pinwheel. To make a mask, you stamp the image on a post-it note, cut it out and then adhere it temporarily to the image. Then I started swiping ink again.

 
Continue making the clouds on your paper. When finished take a pencil and draw a hill. Once you've made the hill the way you like, trace it with your Copic MulitLiner. Now you are ready to color.

 

I colored my pinwheels and then made grass patches all over the hill. I continued coloring the grass until I got it how I liked it. Once you are done you can then assemble your card!

Now I have a card ready to send - it's pretty and it holds special meaning for me. I know I've conveyed that and the recipient will feel it!

I love paper piecing, it is a quick and easy way to add to your focal image and tie your whole card together. But sometimes it can also look just a little flat. So today I am going to share with you how you can add a little depth and movement, just by shading your paper piecing with a grey Copic marker!

Start by stamping your image twice. Once on white card stock of your choice, I used Copic Xpress it, and once on a piece of patterned paper that will complement your project. ( I used Maggie SWIC)

Now just as if I were going to color the image, I add shading to the area that I will be using to paper piece, in this case the dress. I used a Warm Grey #3, (actually in the picture I used WG#5 so that it would really show up for you, but it is a little darker than I really like!) this paper has a subtle taupe in the background and I wanted to complement that. I find that most times the Warm Greys work best for this, but if you don't have any of the warm greys, then try this with what you do have. But start with a #3, you can always add a little darker shade if you like, but it is harder to remove if you don't like it!! Ask me how I know!! :)

 
Now I blend my WG-3 out with a WG-1. As soon as it is completely dry I go back over the entire shaded area with my colorless blender to smooth it all out get rid of any "hard lines".

Now trim out the pieces that you need for your focal image. Normally I color the image before adhering  the paper pieces.

 There you have it a quick and simple way to add some depth and movement to your paper piecing! I have not tried it, but I am sure that this would work with with colored pencils and OMS too, or even chalks! I hope that you will give it a try yourself!!

Happy Tuesday!

Today, I thought I would share the story behind this card, using Peace Be Still.  It ended up in the catalogue on page 88, but wasn't created specifically for that purpose.   

This card was created for my card ministry.  Monthly, I send cards to "shut-in" members of my church.  People who are in nursing homes now or home bound and unable to get to church like they use to. 

It was April when I created it, so I took the liberty of coloring the bird like a robin.  {The stamp says snow bird - creative license - right?}  After a long winter in Wisconsin, we long to see the first robin of Spring.  The robin is a sign of Hope where I live...green grass, flowers blooming - new life is right around the corner.  

I try to send hope and encouragement to the men and women on my list every month and Peace Be Still is a perfect set.  I used all the sentiments in this set "Peace, Be Still" on the front, "Be still, and know that I am God" Psalm 46:10 inside left and "You're in my thoughts today." inside right.  A simple card using just one set. 

Supplies -- Stamps: T-3309 Peace be Still;  Papers: Kraft, Birch & Brown Cardstock; Ink: Tuxedo Black Memento ink, Palette Burnt Umber, Copic Markers [B41, E55, YG93, R29, E13]

This card uses one of Heather Scott's sketches we featured here on this blog back in May. The supplies used are simple. Note that this image is stamped on Birch cardstock and I only used a few Copic markers with a feather technique leaving some "white space".  When you make multiples of a card - simplicity is a good thing.  There is beauty in simplicity.  The focal point is my robin and my message is Hope.

The Angel Company started a new program this year called -- "TAC Card Clubs".  It is about cardmaking with a purpose or I've heard some Angels at seminar call it "Cards for a Cause".  As cardmakers we have the wonderful opportunity to bless others with our handmade creations. 

It is the outward giving that is a natural part of cardmaking that attracted me to this particular form of art.  There are so many in our immediate community or family who could use a kind word or simply would love to receive a card for a special occasion or out of the blue. 

When I started, I did not know any of the men or women on my list, but over the past year I've had the opportunity to meet most of them.  Our church goes Christmas caroling at the nursing homes in mid-December and that is when I met Edna, one of the ladies on my list.  I found out her sister had been a cardmaker and she sincerely appreciated receiving my handmade cards now that her sister had passed. 

You can make a difference. 

Mischelle talks about making "Cards for Kids" on page 2 & 3 of the catalogue.  There are a number of Angels who make cards for birthdays, anniversaries, veterans, wounded soldiers, female soldiers, families of deployed soldiers, the sick, the lonely and the imprisoned.

Christmas in July with Michelle McDaniel

 
Welcome to the last day in our Christmas in July series. Haven't the samples been wonderful? I hope it's challenged you to get a head start on your Holiday cards!

I am showcasing a couple of cards using one of my favorite paper lines, REECE (V-846). It has the traditional red and green colors that you normally think of at Christmas but also some blue and yellow. The first card uses the stamp set WITH HIS GLORY T-3397. I've never inked it up and thought it was about time I did. I just love the reindeer in the set and the gorgeous script on the sentiment is so pretty!

 
I wasn't sure how to color him as my favorite reindeer is Rudolph! I did a quick Google search so that I could *try* (key word here) to make my reindeer look as realistic as possible.

Next up is a little cutie patootie set called ANGELS SING T-3428.

 
This stamp set brings back the memories of caroling which is one of my all time favorite childhood memories. Not sure why I don't do it now - maybe it's because my voice isn't what it used to be, LOL. My daughter, who is a singing fool, would LOVE to do this! Guess I'll need to try and work that in this year...

 

Not sure you can see that I added some yellow shimmer chalk around the image and some grey chalk at the bottom. I used one of the tags from the REECE Soar With It Collection for my sentiment.

I hope I've inspired you to get out all those holiday goodies and start creating! It's never too early and you'll be glad you did once December rolls around. Because you'll be enjoying the festivities while everyone else is freaking out to get their projects done :D

Welcome again to Christmas in July, as we continue all week

with ideas for your Christmas cardmaking!

This cute little mouse is part of the Holly Jolly Christmas stamp set.

Isn't he cute with his present ready to give?

And yes, it is a traditional Christmas color card, but we have a to have a few of those, don't we!

The mouse is colored with Copic markers.

The die cut is Spellbinders Nestabilities Labels 5.

For texture and dimension I added a floss bow to the tag.

A clear Gelly Rolly pen makes the light bulbs shine, but they don't show in the photo.

Christmas in July with Rita Kegg

 

Merry Christmas everyone!!!!  It is 87 degrees outside and here I am making holiday cards ..... what is wrong with this picture.  But with everything we do during the holiday season NOW is the time to start thinking about making your cards so they are ready to mail out in Dec. My goal was to use some of the new non-holiday TAC sets for this post. This really forced me to think out of the box. I used everyday sets for these holiday cards with a few holiday sets thrown in.  It was really fun!!

 

For the first one I used the set 'Brandi and Emma' now I am sure you do not think "Christmas" when you see this great set, but I think it worked.  I colored the images with my Copic markers and used my Scor-pal on the edge to make a 1/8th inch border.  Then I went in between the scored lines and made dots with the NEW Signo Gold Gel Pen.  It is so cool!! I even used it for the buttons on her jeans and the dots on the present.  It makes a really great gold look on the paper, is easy to use, and dries quickly.  I am loving these pens!! I used the set 'Jingle Jolly' for the words and the present. The words are stamped on half of Sellbinders Labels 9 die.  Yes ... you can cut dies in half and use only half of the die if you want.   I really think her eyes are saying 'no peeking' ... what do you think? I wonder what Emma got Brandi for Christmas???

 

 

I so love the 'Vintage Rides' set so I decided it was the next one to put in the holiday spirit!  I stamped the background with the holly stamp from 'Jingle Jolly' with Memento Cottage Ivy ink. Then colored the berries with a red Spica glitter pen by Copic.  These are really great glitter pens and really add a lot of shine and shimmer.  I colored the main image with my Copic makers and added the Silver Signo Gel Pen for the trim of the plane. When I added the banner I noticed that the words from 'Jingle Jolly' fit right inside of it .... now how lucky is that.  This plane was meant to carry the holiday banner for sure!  I added a punched border at the bottom.  The plane and banner are all raised with pop dots.

 

For my last card I kept thinking how cool it would be to get a red shiny vintage car as a gift for Christmas .... or even be given a ride in one ...... so this card was then born. 

 

 

I really think this is my favorite one! I stamped the background with the script stamp from 'Vintage Santa' and then added the snow flacks over top from the same set.  The distressed edge is from the set 'Background Soup'.  These where all stamped with Memento London Fog ink.  I added some antique lace and red plaid ribbon to finish the background.  The vintage car was stamped on a Spellbinders Labels 18 die in white with Memento Tuxedo Black ink.  Then I colored it with my Copics and added the Signo Silver Gel Pen for the trim.  I used the distress stamp for the background of the die from 'Background Soup' and edge it with the Memento London Fog ink.  It is then raised with pop dots.  The greeting is from 'Vintage Santa' and is stamped in black ink.

 

My goal was to design cards using non-holiday stamp set so how did I do???  Think Christmas everytime you use a stamp set and I bet you will come up with some great designs for the holiday too.

Christmas in July with Kerry Urbatch

Hello Savvy Stampers, Kerry here to share my take on "Christmas In July" on the Savvy Projects Blog!  This week my fellow design team members will be sharing some inspirational cards to help revv your holiday mojo.  I know you LOVED what Angela presented yesterday and I just can't wait to see the others in the coming days. 

For me, getting a jump start on my Christmas cards is CRITICAL! Unfortunately, the rush-rush of the year pushes things aside and I'm often spending the last weeks of December madly creating cards to send to family and friends...NOT GOOD!  Well, I'm on a mission this year to change all that.  In January, I set out a box designated for my Christmas cards and I'm proud to say it has a whopping 10 cards in it...Better than last year!  Today I'm sharing THREE cards I can add to that box.  They were all made just after returning from Seminar...Gotta love inking up those new stamps!  Hope you find them an inspiration and joy!   

My first card was created using three sets:  RN-13 Beautiful Lace, TA3480 Circles of Love and Trendy Greetings.  This card measures 4 1/4 inch square.  I even ventured out to the pine tree to pluck a twig from the trunk!   The lace doily was stamped on white cardstock using Memento New Sprout ink.  The sentiment and the large circular icon on the green ribbon were stamped with Memento Rose Bud.  The smaller icon was stamped in Memento Angel Pink.  Adding a little microfine glitter and a lime green brad adds a little POP to this design. To finish up on the embellishments, I added some additional icons from the Circles of Love, a button and a star shaped "bling".  Not your traditional Christmas card but it's perfect for that someone special. 

 

Card #2 is more traditional.   When I sat down to create this card, I really wanted to do something "Christmasy" with the Dotty Flower set.  I knew it could be done and I just LOVE adapting my stamps for all seasons.  I just loved the dots AND the flower just screamed..."Turn me into a WREATH!"...so I did!  I love my Memento Ink so I used Rhubarb ink to create the tone-on-tone pattern.  The wreath was stamped on white cardstock with Memento Bamboo Leaves and then distressed to mute the white down a bit.  Since I didn't have any of the new Smoothies Cardstock yet, I pulled out my old stand-by...Bazzill Red.  Lime Green ribbon just gave this card the extra KICK it needed.     
 

You know me...I can't seem to stay away from the BLING!  Had to add a few dots here and there to give it some sparkle! 
 

My 3rd card was created using two new stamp sets.  I just love the hot air balloons in Love This Day but who in their right mind would ride in a hot air balloon in the middle of winter?  Well, I chopped those strings off and cut around the stamped image to create the perfect SANTA HEAD...LOVE IT!  Colored with my Copics, of course!  I'm diggin' the asymmetrical look so I stamped the sentiment (from the coordinating set Love Lines) far off to the left and added a little ribbon, then popped Santa right on the edge...OOOHHH...Watch out! 
 
Boy was this quick and simple to color!  I think it took about five minutes to color him in...Copic colors used on this image:  Hat:  R02, 14, 24, Face:  E50, 01, Fur and hair:  BG000; C00, 02

Good Morning and welcome to the start of Christmas in July!!  For the next five days we will be featuring wonderful holiday creations to inspire you!! I love, love, love, creating Christmas projects, weather it be cards, mini books, ornaments, home decor, or packaging. So many options to choose from, so many ideas running through my head, but like everyone I have a limited amount of time to create. So starting early is a must. This year I have taken up a challenge to use non Christmas papers for my Christmas projects (thank you Connie!) The Angel Company has so many beautiful paper collections, so it was not hard to do!! Just think outside the box a little. Several of our paper collections have a sheet or two, (if not more,) that can be used for a traditional Christmas look, and what is left can be used for everyday projects, which makes our paper collections an even  greater bargain!! (Or these papers could be used in nontraditional Christmas color combos that have been so popular these days!)

For this first card I used Maggie SWIC V-847and Amberly Grace card stock collection B-320. I wanted to create an very traditional Christmas look, I love this light blue paper in the Maggie SWIC, to me it looks cool and wintery. We have so many beautiful Christmas stamps to choose from, but I wanted to take my challenge a step further and to use some sets that were not "Christmas" sets!! This sweet little angel is from Fairytale Fun R-2061. Sentiment is from Hung on a Tree T-3420, very much a Christmas set!!

This next card features Mia's Cottage SWIC R-2503 and card stock B-318, combined with scarlet card stock V-237. I embossed the polka dots from Background Soup  T-3346 onto the bright green paper from Mia's Cottage with white embossing powder. This sweet little mouse is from Mice Day T-3301, (sentiment was computer generated).

I hope this gave you a few ideas and maybe helped you think outside of the box on "seasonal" papers and stamps. For my Spotlight card(s) I wanted to go out of the box and think of some different ways to 'spotlight'.

Here are the 4 cards I came up with ... hope you enjoy!

Are you wondering if your eyes are deceiving you?!  That IS Tropical Smoothies Cardstock that I stamped the base image on!  It's layered onto Boysenberry Smoothies and my spotlight image is stamped on our Caboodles Cardstock ... kind of an unexpected palette right?!  Trust me ... I didn't plan it!  LOL!  I'm trying VERY hard to go outside my box!

After I colored the image with my Copic markers I melted Bees Wax on top!

This is a quickie card ~ I used Shimmer Chalks to color it in and it worked GREAT!  I put Scor-tape along the back and added the ribbon on the side ... something different for me!  {smiles}

Guest Designer Christine Pennington & New Creation!

 

I am so honored to be able to be the Dream Team designer today for two reasons.  First, I am celebrating my wedding anniversary {11 years ago, yesterday}!  To be honest, I still feel like a newly wed {smiles}. Second, today is the first day of Seminar. {I wish every angel could be with us!}  Know that we are all thinking of everyone who could not make it this year!

Todays card features a sneak peek of New Creation --what a perfect set for my anniversary.

 

 

For fun, I am sharing a recent photo of the two of us.  In May, all three of our children were home for a visit so it was a perfect time to get some new photos of all of us.  This photo makes me smile.  Happy Anniversary Peep!

 

Last but not least is a card dedicated to my hubs!  I thought I should do a his & hers cardset! This card features another newer set Relax & Fish.

Guest Designer Paula-Kay Bourland and Mama Wants Sneak Peek!

 

Tune in Tuesday is here again with another sneak peek stamp set from our new Inspiration Book and Catalogue.

Mama Wants is a fun set, and I enjoyed coloring the lady with all the bling and foo-foo!  I used Copic Markers to color her and added a jewel for her diamond ring and jewels for the flowers on her shoes and hat.  The pearl necklace was colored with a gel pen, as were the flowers.  Then to add more shine, I added the clear Gelly Roll Gel pen to the buckle on her belt and to the feathers on her hat.

 

I made my center step card using the Scor-Pal and cutting slits with my paper trimmer. The background cardstock is from the More Mimi collection, as is the printed cardstock. The sides of the card are accented with pearl hearts from the Clear and Pearl Gem Collections.

 

Just a few more days until Seminar.  I can't wait to get my hands on the new Inspiration Book and Catalogue and see all the wonderful new stamp sets. 

It has been fun getting a sneak peek this month of some of the new sets.  The samples have been incredible on the Savvy Projects blog.

Guest Designer Michelle McDaniel and He Created Spring Sneak Peek!

 
 Today is my day to share another sneak peek with you. I couldn't be more excited! I'm a HUGE Mabelle RO fan so when I got this set, He Created Spring, I was over-the-top thrilled to create something. I knew that I wanted to use pinks and purples with it and Maggie SWIC was the PERFECT choice!!

 
I don't know about you but I find it easier to pick out my papers first. Then I pull Copic Markers that match it. I have to apologize though because I cleaned my desk BEFORE writing down the colors I used. Believe me I'm a tad upset as I know I will be doing this color combo again!  

I paper pieced the dress and LOVE how it turned out. Maggie papers are the perfect fabric look! The rich colors were perfect to add some detail with my white gel pen - can you see it? I added dots to the flowers, leaves, her bows and some of her dress.

FAVORITES Blog Hop!

So this Blog Hop is ALL about your FAVORITE!  It could be your FAVORITE TAC stamp set, your FAVORITE technique, your FAVORITE TAC paper collection, your FAVORITE retired TAC set ... even your FAVORITE way to use glitter glue!  {smiles}  What's your FAVORITE?  We wanna' see!

Well, my FAVORITE is probably paper piecing!  At least I have LOTS of paper pieced cards in my sample box that I've created ... I guess that kinda makes this a FAVORITE for me!  {more smiles}

I decided to use one of the new sets from our upcoming Inspiration Book & Catalogue that I designed called Chair-ished ~ you can see the Sneak Peek here!  In the photo above I didn't color correct anything ... and in the shots below I just did the automatic color correct buttons ... I used the green, winter scape blue, and winter scape blue floral patterned paper patterned papers in our Maggie Collection (not official names ... just how I describe them), solid blue cardstock, green ribbon that matches the green paper and a few gray copic markers.  On my screen ... my greens read really brown ... perhaps they'll read greener on yours?!

Guest Designer Debra Miller and Relax & Fish Sneak Peek!

 

Today we have another Sneak Peek! I can't wait to see the catalogue at the end of the month. From the bits I've seen we are going to have some fabulous new images. This is Relax & Fish - isn't it a great masculine image? I had a LOT of fun coloring it.

Like usual, I studied the image.  I actually searched online to get an idea how to color the fish. Is it a Salmon? Rainbow trout? Still not sure. I picked a salmon. Then I compared my general color palette to my TAC paper swatch book and came up with Winchester as a great match for the colors I had in mind.

I colored the image with Copic markers.  I ended up using a lot of colors and even some of the new ones released this year.

Fish: W1, W3, R01, R02, E30; Trees and Foliage: E31, E33, E55, E57, E59, E87, YG91, BG93; Water: BG70, BG72, BG75, BG78, B21; Fisherman: E21, E13, YR24, W3, YG91

The sky is a light pastel blue chalk.  The edges of the image are sponged with Cognac and Burnt Umber Palette ink.

This image has my Dad written all over it.  So I added "for you Dad" from Thinking of You...one of my favorite word sets.  Also some hemp cord from the local craft store, just a little rustic touch to finish it off.
